SCAM ALERT: Traffic ticket email looks legit but it’s a scam
Seems like crooks have brought new life to an old scam that involves traffic tickets.
Even the Yuma Police Department said it looks real.
However, what looks to be a traffic citation is nothing but a hoax, and there are several warning signs.
First, the alleged sender appears to be the Department of Motor Vehicles.
In Arizona, it’s known as the Motor Vehicle Division ( MVD ).
Secondly, on an official ticket or citation, it’s going to have identification information like a license plate number, name, and address.
YPD confirmed that everything about this email is fake.
Sgt. Lori Franklin said, ” [The emails says to pay] within 48 hours or you’re going to be arrested. That stuff is not going to happen. If you get a civil traffic violation you will know it because you’re going to be stopped by the officer. You’ll be given a ticket in person. ”
Most importantly, the MVD doesn’t collect money for citations.
All civil traffic tickets are handled by the Yuma Municipal Court.
YPD admitted the email scam looks official but warns the community not to fall for it.
To pay a ticket, drivers can go to the municipal court located at 1515 S. Second Avenue.
Another option is to pay by phone by calling 928-373-4800 or pay by mail.
