The Arizona Republic makes historic unionizing vote

Alan Stark

The top newspaper in Arizona makes history with a 64-30 vote to unionize.

The vote will protect local journalists’ rights while also sending a powerful message to the current owner.

The owner responded by saying it respects the rights of its employees and their decision, and they will continue to serve Arizonans as its leading news source.

The vote opens negotiations over wages, benefits, and working conditions. This could take a while, as the Los Angeles Times Guild voted to unionize in January 2018 and has yet to negotiate a contract.

The unionizing vote affects The Arizona Republic newsroom, which produces content for The Republic, azcentral.com and the Spanish-language publication La Voz .
