Strong winds whip the Desert Southwest

A wind advisory remains in effect for Yuma County and Southeastern Imperial County until 5 p.m. Thursday night.

Forecasters expect winds to reach speeds between 30 and 40 miles per hour. They say gusts could reach up to 50 miles per hour .

The National Weather Service urges caution when driving, especially for high-profile vehicles. They also warn drivers of blowing dust.

At the same time the area remains under a red flag warning through 11 Thursday night.

The combination of high winds and low humidity is raising the risk of wildfires in Southeastern California and Western Arizona.

Areas affected include Yuma, Martinez Lake, the Lower Colorado River Valley, and Imperial County.
