Binational border march for cancer awareness

Local health agencies gathered in front of the Mexico Consulate in Calexico for the 6th Annual Binational Pink Ribbon March.

Cancer advocates and community members from both sides of the border marched in support of cancer victims and survivors.

“We’re in this fight, to support survivors and to support family members who have lost their loved ones in this fight,” said Adriana Buelna , Ventanilla de Salud Program Coordinator.

Dozens dressed in pink shirts and pink ribbons marched from the Mexico Consulate in Calexico to the border wall.

” It’s a binational event, that is done in conjunction with people in Mexicali. We will march to the border wall were we will meet with people in Mexicali, and that will reflect and symbolize the unity between us, ” said Buelna .

“What is going to happen is that we will share the ribbon from the Mexican side to the American side,” said Buelna .

” We are here to give them our help, to give them love and support. They need to know that their are resources here for them to fight diseases like breast cancer, ” said Buelna .

Pioneers Memorial Healthcare says the Imperial Valley is one of the counties with the highest rate of breast cancer in women in the state.

“I’m here to support this cause and the programs here because they have shown us support,” said Martha Renteria .

” If you see the people in Mexicali and the people in the valley, we are the same people with the same cultural ties. Both cities grew up together and we should be fighting together against problems that affect all of us, ” said Tonatiuh Romero, Mexico consulate in Calexico .

The Mexico consulate emphasized the importance of standing in solidarity with Mexicali.
