Military Matters: Honoring SSG Gregory La Fleur

For today’s Military Matters, we honor Staff Sergeant (Staff Sgt) Gregory La Fleur.

SSG La Fleur enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2006. He is assigned as an Aerial Delivery Equipment Repair Supervisor/Tester for the Airborne Test Force at Yuma Proving Ground (YPG).

According to a press release provided from YPG, SSG La Fleur was born in Providence, Rhode Island, in May of 1972. He graduated from Pekin Community High School in 1991. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in January of 2006 and completed Basic Combat Training in Fort Jackson South Carolina. He then proceeded to Ft. Benning, GA for Basic Airborne Training graduating in May of 2006 and earning his Basic Parachutist Badge. Upon graduating from Airborne School, he was sent to Ft. Lee, VA to complete the Advanced Individual Training (AIT).

Upon completion of AIT, he was awarded the Military Occupational Specialty 92R10 (Parachute Rigger.

His military and civilian education include Equal Opportunity Leaders Course, Unit Prevention Leader Course, Sling Load Inspector Course, Advanced Leader Course, Military Freefall Parachutist Course, Basic Leader Course, Airdrop Load Inspector Course, Combat Life Saver Course, Combatives Level 1&2, and the Airborne School.

Illinois Central College for his EMT license. SSG La Fleur is also an active member of the United States Parachute Association.

SSG La Fleur assignments include 11th QM TSC in Fort Bragg, NC where he served as a parachute packer, additionally, he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on four separate occasions serving as a parachute packer; 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) as a parachute packer, inspector tester, section chief and also deployed serving as a convoy gunner with the 82nd Brigade Sustainment Battalion.

Some of SSG La Fleur’s awards and decorations include, the Soldier’s Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (4 OLC), Army Good Conduct Medal (3 knots), National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (3 Combat Stars), Global War On Terrorism Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Medal (1 OLC), NATO International Security Assistance Force Medal, Combat Action Badge, Basic Parachutist Badge, Military Free Fall Badge, Army Parachute Rigger Badge and the Driver’s Badge.

His hobbies include movies, theater, discovering new breweries, shooting, and drawing. He is the third of three siblings, he has one brother and one sister. He is married to Nicole and has 4 children, Chazlyn, Sidney, Emilly, and Ian.
