Imperial County paves the way for cleaner air

Imperial County has some of the worst air quality in California. Now
Valley leaders are taking steps to clear the county’s air.

On Friday, county and state officials celebrated the completion of a parking lot that will actually help Calexico high school students, and the surrounding community, breathe a little easier.

The pavement project took one year to complete and cost over $400,000 in state funds.

Belen Leon-Lopez, Imperial County Air Pollution Control Project Manager said paving the dirt parking lot helps mitigate the amount of dust particles in the air.

” We’re close to the border. A lot of emission transport from Mexicali. Helping out the schools. Helping out, reduce the emissions that we can because they are the border city. So reducing these types of emissions anywhere we can, I mean it’s a whole benefit to the community, ” said Leon-Lopez.

The project is an example of local and state governments collaborating to improve the quality of life of valley residents.
