Immigration detainee dies at Southern California Hospital

Another illegal immigrant has died while in ICE custody.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says 37-year-old Nebane Abienwi died of a brain hemorrhage Tuesday in Chula Vista. He was from Cameroon.

ICE says Abienwi applied for admission to the U.S. without proper entry documents on September 5 at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. Agents transferred him to a detention center in San Diego on September 19.

Agents say they had to rush Abienwi to the hospital last week after he suffered what they describe as a ” hypertensive event. ” They say he appeared paralyzed on his left side, and could not answer questions.

Abienwi is the second detainee to die from a brain hemorrhage while in ICE custody. In March, 27-year-old Jose Bucio died after suffering a similar hemorrhage at a center in Adelanto , California.
