U.S. Marine Band returns to Imperial Valley
It’s been a decade since ” The President’s Own ” United States Marine Band treated the Imperial Valley to its patriotic sounds. Next month the talented group of military musicians makes its return.
The Marine Band is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization. It was founded in 1798, and has performed for every U.S. President since John Adams. It became known as ” The President’ s Own ” during Thomas Jefferson’s administration.
Legendary American composer and conductor John Philip Sousa first took the band on tour back in 1891. The group began making annual tours in the 1920’s . It suspended travel during the Great Depression, and performed additional shows to inspire patriotism during World War II. The Marine Band’s national tours resumed in 1946, and have continued every year since.
Band Director Colonel Jason K. Fettig says he tries to tailor each show to its audience. Fettig says, ” We always try to highlight music on our programs that celebrates the region we are visiting, whether it be marches that provide a connection or folk music that might be associated with certain areas of the country. ”
The band will perform a concert at Imperial Valley College on Sunday, October 27th , 2019 at 3 p.m. Free tickets become available October 1st at https://marineband.ticketleap.com. There is a four ticket limit per request.
