Imperial County superior court to be more strict on residents who no-show to jury duty

Imperial Valley residents who fail to show up to jury duty could take a hit in their wallets for a fine of up to $750.

Of the 1,400 jury duty summons the superior court of Imperial County send out weekly, less than 250 respond.

Luis Olachea , the court technology administrator for the local superior court said in an effort to address that alarming number, the court will now randomly select 50 random residents who failed to appear, to be summoned in front of a judge.

” It’s a vital piece to the judicial system here in the valley. Really the ultimate goal for us is to hope that more people see the importance of it and start to come out and report for jury duty every day as their directed to. ”

Court officials said due to the low numbers of jurors, they’re only able to do two to three jury cases a week.
