Fraud and opioids crimes on the rise in San Luis
The San Luis Police Department ( SLPD ), said that drug-related cases, fraud, and criminal damage have increased in the city this year.
” Opioids is up an incredible amount, 3 cases in 2018 and 14 already this year, ” said Chief Richard Jessup , with SLPD .
Chief Jessup said that opioid cases are on track for beating last year’s numbers with still four months left in 2019. He also said that marijuana and meth busts are not far behind. This year authorities reported 44 marijuana and 28 meth cases.
” The amount of phone calls that people get on their cell phones from the IRS, fake organizations is incredible because we are a border town, ” said Chief Jessup .
Fraud is another crime the chief said has been surprising to him with 98 cases this year compared to 100 in 2018. These crimes are usually targeted toward senior citizens.
The chief said that these crimes tend to increase during the agriculture season because of the population doubles due to the influx of workers crossing from Mexico or those traveling from Salinas, California.
