Yuma Border Patrol: less than 100 migrant families in custody

The number of migrant families apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border in Yuma County has drastically declined, according to U.S. Border Patrol, but they still consider the situation a border crisis.

For months now Yuma has made national headlines due to the thousands of migrant families that Border Patrol agents have apprehended at our border, eve leading Yuma Mayor Dough Nicholls to declare a state of emergency.

During the peak of the humanitarian crisis, agents would stop anywhere from 400 to 450 families per day in May. Since then, those numbers have drastically declined.

” During the height of the crisis when at one point we had over 1,600 illegal aliens in custody when our capacity was at 400 in the whole sector, ” said Agent Jose Garibay , with the Yuma Sector Border Patrol.

Border Patrol confirms that currently there are less than 100 migrant families in custody across all three stations including the soft-sided facility. He also said there are about 30 migrant children in custody.

” The current reprieve was in a lot of the resources we were allocating during the crisis within CBP , DHS, and the federal air Marshall, the search force we were able to get them back to the mission, ” said Agent Garibay .

News 11 did reach out to the Mayor of San Luis, Arizona to see if there are currently any migrants in the community. Mayor Sanchez did confirm both the church and the dance hall of Comite De Bienestar have closed down due to not having any migrant families.

” Were still apprehending more people than we did years past, there were some days zero apprehensions but for here were still catching more in the past even though it’s lower than in recent months, ” said Agent Garibay .
