Miraculous recovery celebrated during visit
A surprise visit leads to a joyful reunion in Somerton .
In May of 2017 , Jesus Sandoval and a friend wrecked an all-terrain vehicle near the County 17th Main Drain. The ATV hit a concrete piping cover, and the teens were both launched into the Main Drainage Canal.
Fortunately, an Arizona Public Service worker saw the crash. David Hooker ran down the steep bank, and pulled the boys to safety.
Somerton Cocopah first responders arrived to find Jesus in such critical condition, they doubted he would survive. Still, they did their best to save his life.
On Monday afternoon, engineer Israel Carbajal and firefighter Anthony Burruel found out just how successful their efforts were. Jesus stopped by the fire station to say hello.
Fire Chief Paul De Anda says it’s very rare for a person to survive the sort of injuries Jesus suffered.
De Andra writes: ” This visit was a reminder to all of the SCFD personnel that what they do is important, but in the end, the fight to live and recover remains in the hands of the people we treat. ”
The Chief says miracles like Jesus’ recovery make efforts by SCFD worthwhile.
He joins with his fellow firefighters in congratulating the teen on the tenacity, fight, and strength it took to overcome his injuries.
