Arizona lawmaker apologizes for controversial comments
Arizona Representative Jay Lawrence is apologizing for controversial comments about minorities and guns.
At an August 29th forum on gun control, the Scottsdale Republican said black and Hispanic communities were ” better armed than the police officers who are supposed to be controlling them. ”
Lawrence also said they ” have firearms galore. ”
The comments were widely condemned by Democrats.
Lawrence now says said he ” shouldn’t have singled out specific communities. ”
In today’s statement, the representative said he never meant to offend or denigrate anyone. He says the incident taught him the importance of choosing his words more carefully.
Lawrence previously admitted his comments were unfair and too broad, but stopped short of apologizing.
