Arizona may cancel Republican Presidential primary

Arizona is among four states currently considering canceling their Presidential primary elections.

Politico reports Republican parties in Arizona, South Carolina, Nevada, and Kansas could finalize plans to scrap their elections as soon as this weekend.

The move would prevent potential Republican candidates from challenging President Donald Trump’s bid for re-election in those states. Proponents say it would save state parties money. However, opponents say such a decision would rig the elections in Trump’s favor.

The Arizona Republic reports state party leaders have been considering the cancellation for several months. It says Republican party chair Kelli Ward began circulating a resolution on the issue back in Apri l.

This isn’t the first time one of the major political parties have canceled their Presidential primary. Democrats opted out in 1996 and 2012 in support of Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Republicans canceled their primary in 2004, when George W. Bush sought his second term.
