El Centro Police Department holding checkpoint

The El Centro Police Department ( ECPD ) is going to be conducting a DUI and Driver’s License Checkpoint this Saturday at an undisclosed location.

Checkpoints like this are placed based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests. Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, and checking drivers for proper licensing.

The checkpoint will be taking place from 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.

ECPD is reminding drivers that DUI doesn’t just mean alcohol, but can be prescription drugs and marijuana as well. In order to ensure a safe night of fun that doesn’t involve a DUI the police department is offering the following reminders:

Always make sure there is a designated sober driver, whether it be a friend who isn’t drinking, ride-share, cab, or public transportation.

If you see someone who is clearly under the influence, and they are trying to drive, take the keys from them and help make other arrangements for the person to get home.

If you see any drunk drivers, call 911.

If you are hosting a party, offer non-alcoholic drinks. Also, monitor who is drinking and how they plan on getting home.

Drivers who are caught driving impaired and charged with DUI can expect to be paying about $13,500 which incudes fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension, and other expenses, as well as possible jail time.
