USS Arizona Memorial in Hawaii set to reopen this weekend

THE reopening of Hawaii ‘ s USS Arizona Memorial has been scheduled for Labor Day weekend following a 15-month closure.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Wednesday that walk-on access to the memorial in Honolulu will begin Sunday.

A malfunction with the concrete dock’s anchoring system forced the closure of the memorial to foot traffic beginning in May 2018.

Exceptionally high tides in 2017 are believed to have dislodged concrete blocks sunk into the sediment of Pearl Harbor and connected by chains to the dock.

Park employees last week installed a visitor ramp for walk-on visits to the 105-foot (32-meter) floating dock and reinstalled the memorial’s bridge spanning 30 feet ( 9 meters ) and weighing 4 tons (3.6 metric tons).

Officials say the repair project has cost more than $2.1 million.
