Calexico panhandler arrested for possession of drugs
A welfare check on a panhandler in Calexico resulted in a drug bust, Thursday.
According to the Calexico Police Department (CPD), a panhandler was arrested for being in possession of drugs.
CPD received reports of a homeless man in need of medical attention.
“We received a call from somebody that had fallen off their bicycle and was possibly injured,” said Sergeant Sean Acuna , CPD.
CPD said the man was semi-conscious and became aggressive when paramedics arrived.
He was taken into custody for his own safety.
It was then, that officers discovered the man was in possession of drugs.
” An officer saw what appeared to be a baggie, which he recognized from his prior experience with training in contraband. He removed the baggie, from the subjects pocket, ” said Sgt. Acuna .
“He found approximately 3.7 grams of methamphetamine and 6.2 grams of heroin,” said Sgt, Acuna .
Police said they also found questionable items in his bag.
” A homeless sign saying hungry, need help, items that can be associated with burglary tools. Bolt cutters, screwdrivers, pliers, and things that can be used for criminal activity, ” said Sgt. Acuna .
CPD said the 38-year-old panhandler was released due to medical distress, but charges are pending.
” It appears that he had actually used heroin and was in the process of overdosing. If you’re gonna give money you’re better off giving them food. Ninety percent of the time they use that money for drugs, ” said Sgt. Acuna .
CPD said they are working on a report to submit to the District Attorney’s Office for a warrant for his arrest.
According to CPD the man is from out of county and has an extensive criminal record.
