Police looking for two kids in connection to fire that destroyed children’s playground at park
Calexico Police are looking for a 9 and 12-year-old for questioning in a fire that destroyed the children’s playground at Heber park on Thursday around 6 p.m.
Officer Shaun Sundahl said a witness saw the kids running away from the park during the fire.
” Two boys between the ages of nine and twelve leaving the playground area that was lit. He didn’t see them start the fire he just saw them leaving. And shortly after they left the playground equipment was engulfed in flames, ” Sundahl said.
Police said a flammable fluid was used in the fire. He said whoever did it is in serious trouble.
“If we find out that they lit the park on fire, arson is a felony,” Sundahl said.
City officials said the loss is over $200,000.
Resident Jesse Garcia saw the flames and tried to help put the fire out but it was too late.
” Many kids come here and play and as you can see now, they can’t, because half of the playground is being burned down completely. I’ve been here many times and i talk to the people to see what they like in this park and they told me the playground is their favorite thing. But, now, unfortunately, this happened, ” Garcia said.
Police urge the parents of those kids to bring them in to the station. They are not suspects at this time, but they might have information about how the fire started.
