How to react in an active shooter situation
It’s not a question that we are more aware of our surroundings now than ever before. More and more people want to know what should do if they are confronted by a mass shooter.
” Kind of nerve-wracking because of what’s been going on. You don’t know what people are thinking nowadays, ” said Robert Ybarra , Yuma resident. ” F or it to come to my town, where I grew up. It wouldn’t make me afraid to live here but it would just be shocking. ”
Monica Ortiz, also a Yuma resident, said she could’ve lived the nightmare herself in Gilroy.
” Thank the Lord I didn’t go. My grandson got sick. I didn’t go, but I had my ticket to go. Everything happens for a reason, but I’m here. I’m back at home, ” said Ortiz.
The Yuma Police Department ( YPD ) offered the community tips just in case the unthinkable happens.
YPD said to remember these three words, ” Run, hide, and fight. ”
” Be it anything you can find, use it as a weapon and fight for your life, but that is your last case scenario. First, try to get out. Second, try to hide. But third, if there’s nothing else available, fight for your life, ” said Sgt. Lori Franklin. ” If there’s a chair, anything that you can find, make a weapon out of it and fight for your life. ”
Officers explained even though these events can be scary, it is important not to live in fear.
YPD added officers feel prepared if a mass shooting were to hit our city.
