Border Patrol agents confiscate hard drugs smuggled via ultralight aircraft
Authorities confiscated methamphetamine and cocaine that was allegedly smuggled into Calexico via an ultralight aircraft from Mexico early Sunday morning.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said agents noticed an ultralight aircraft flying over the international border into the United States at around 12:30 a.m. The aircraft was described to be flying without any lights.
Agents tracked the aircraft which descended just north of Calexico and soon flew back towards Mexico. A white Volkswagen Jetta then left the area and agents followed the vehicle to a parking lot near the intersection of Dogwood Road and Danenberg Road.
Authorities encountered the two individuals that were traveling in the Jetta, searched the vehicle, and discovered two large duffel bags containing narcotics.
Inside the duffel bags, authorities found 40 duct-taped bundles containing a white powder-like substance. The 40 bundles tested positive for the characteristics of methamphetamine with an estimated value of $119,300.
Agents also unpacked 17 cellophane-wrapped bricks testing positive for cocaine with an estimated value of $355,300.
The two individuals, who are United States citizens, were arrested on suspicion of receiving the narcotics transported by the ultralight aircraft.
Both passengers, narcotics and the vehicle were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
