Resource fair bring awareness to the community about the benefits of breastfeeding

Local health experts said the Imperial Valley has one of the lowest exclusive breastfeeding rates.

They hope to change that statistic and show the benefits of breastfeeding.

El Centro Regional Medical Center Lactation Program Manager, Lizeth Ramirez said, ” Breastfeeding is the foundation of life. It’s really important because of all the nutrients that breast milk has, enhances the baby’s immune system. ”

Health experts also want to lower the chances of deaths among infants.

Kitty Gay, a nurse from the Imperial County Public Health Department said, ” It’s important that they’re up. That you’re making eye contact. Like it’s a breastfeeding. But I mean some moms for different reasons choose to bottle-feed so it’s important not to prop them up with the bottle because they can choke on that. ”

Carmen Blackwell hopes to come away from the event as a more informed parent.
Blackwell said, ” I like to be able to provide for my children as best as I can. And do everything that’s necessary to improve their health. ”

Samantha Perez, an expecting mother is making the event a family affair and wants to start motherhood on the right foot.

” So they’re also going to be informed with me. So I think if you like engage the whole family and everyone’s supportive it’s a better motherhood experience, ” said Perez.
