Early ballots to be sent out Wednesday

It is election season in the city of Yuma with early ballots going out Wednesday.

Once voters get their hands on their ballots, they can drop them off here at the Yuma County Recorder’s Office in downtown Yuma or mail them in.

Three seats are up for grabs in the Yuma City Council race with six people looking to claim them.

NOTE: * is next to incumbents or those who already are on the council:

Jason Bradley
Chris Morris
Robert Scarborough
*Mike Shelton
Ema Lea Shoop
*Edward Thomas

Jenny Farmer-Umphress is running unopposed for the municipal judge seat.

Election day is August 27 and it may be the voters’ only opportunity to vote in the primary election.

” The reason for that is there is a city charter that automatically elevates candidates from the primary election if they receive more than fifty percent of the votes, ” explained Dave Nash, City of Yuma Public Affairs.

This means if three of the candidates get more than 50 percent of the votes, they will each take a seat on the council.

News 11 will be featuring each candidate in the upcoming days to allow the public to learn more about them.
