Council member apologizes for car collisions
Calexico Council Member Rosie Fernandez gave city council an open letter of apology.
Mayor Bill Hodge said, “and it was in essence telling the council and the public how sorry she was for her mistakes.”
Fernandez was allegedly in a hit-and-run and then arrested in another incident by California Highway Patrol for allegedly driving under the influence after CHP said her car hit another vehicle.
“She wanted to move forward and redeem herself and win back the trust of the community,” Hodge said.
The letter was read out loud during Wednesday’s regular council meeting.
” I have let down the people who put their faith and support in me. I will do everything in my power to learn from these severe and regrettable mistakes and to gain back your trust, ” Hodge said reading Fernandez’s letter.
Both cases are expected to be handled by the Attorney General.
“There is no excuse for my failure to live up to my responsibilities,” Hodge said, continuing reading Fernandez’s letter.
Businessman Guillermo Hermosillo said she should resign.
” I think she should step down. She’s not going to serve the public as she should, ” Hermosillo said.
Fernandez didn’t say in the letter if she’ll resign or not. She hasn’t been at council meetings since her DUI arrest.
Mayor Hodge said, “She will not be forced to step down from her position.”
