Man distracts suspect in armed robbery, manages to escape

A man was able to escape from an armed robbery that happened Wednesday morning by using his cell phone as a distraction.

Yuma police ( YPD ) said the victim was doing maintenance work on the 1300 block of West 24th Street.

It was reported that the suspect presented a gun and demanded the victim’s wallet. Authorities said the victim refused to give the suspect his wallet and threw his cell phone on the ground as a distraction. He managed to get away safely and contacted the police.

Police are describing the suspect as a white male, in his 30’s , approximately 5’10 height, 220 pounds, wearing a black shirt, black pants or slacks, and a black baseball cap. He was last seen running on foot westbound towards 14th Avenue and headed northbound. A black hat was found in the 1900 block South 14th Avenue. The suspect is still at large.

No injuries were reported and no further information is available, according to YPD .

Detectives are investigating this case.

If caught, the suspect will face felony charges.
