Resources available for sex crime survivors
A horrific crime that happens every day even in our own backyard, sex crimes.
In just the last six months, the city of Yuma has seen 160 reported cases.
This time last year, the Yuma Police Department ( YPD ) took 122 reports ranging from assault, abuse, and exploitation.
This year, officers have already taken 160 reports.
The Yuma Police Department works alongside several agencies to ensure those who come forward get the help they need.
In fact, YPD said you don’t have to report to them, you can report anonymously at Amberly’s Place.
Victims can also turn to The Healing Journey, a resource for survivors.
” We provide mentoring, life skills which are important, counseling, support groups, peer support groups, cycle educational groups. We’re just wanting to wrap ourselves around you to get you to go, ” said Estrella Fitch, The Healing Journey.
The Healing Journey explained they have helped several survivors of these unthinkable crimes. The organization added it thinks more people are reporting because they are better educated about how to handle those types of situations.
It is important to note that not all reported cases lead to convictions.
