Tips on how to keep pets safe and happy on Fourth of July
Fourth of July is just around the corner with fireworks and loud noises. What about our pets?
Local fur baby experts share with us how to keep the ” adorables ” happy and safe during all that celebration.
First, we spoke with three young El Centro sisters who seemed to know exactly what to do.
” I think they are scared because there are loud sounds when the fireworks are going. When the fireworks go, ” Alyson Lopez said.
“I’m going to hug him,” Chrislyn said.
“We might just keep him calm or something, or just watch it thru inside or in the window,” Aryelle said.
Keeana Nunez, from Brawley , gave us further advice. She said pets have extremely sensitive hearing.
” She’s probably going to get really scared. I think I’ll just comfort her and tell her it’s okay when she’s scared. And I think she’ll be able to handle it because it’s only going to be for a little bit , it’s not a show of fireworks. I’ll just comfort her and give her some treats, ” Nunez said.
I.C. Humane Society Volunteer Kathy Dobson said pet owners should do everything possible to prevent pets from running away and getting lost.
” The number one tip is don’t leave them home alone. Don’t leave them locked outside. They can jump the fence. They can dig under the fence. If they get scared, they’re going to figure out a way to get out and you’re going to lose your dog, ” Dobson said.
She mentioned that medication is available.
“If you have a very nervous dog, you can go to the vet before the Fourth of July and get some medication to sedate your dog,” Dobson said.
Devon Apodaca , Humane Society Director, said taking good care of your pets is the responsible thing to do.
” Make sure that all of your pets have a collar or a harness that is properly fitted with a name tag that has current contact owner info. And also make sure that your pets are microchipped . All fences and gates are properly locked and secured, ” Apodaca said.
A recent study said that more pets are lost during the Fourth of July day than any other time in the year.
