Speeding car rams into pole residents call for extra safety measures

Calexico residents living on Rancho Frontera Street, are calling for extra safety measures in their neighborhood following, a single vehicle car crash that was caught on camera.

They say this isn’t the first time that speeding has caused havoc in their neighborhood.

“I don’t know what they are waiting for, If they are waiting for someone to get ran over, that’s sad,” said Lily Vasquez, resident of the home that was crashed.

On Monday, a driver was caught on camera speeding and crashing into a pole on Rancho Frontera Street.

” All of a sudden we hear a crash, we saw dust and everything. We ran out over here and that’s when we saw the car there, it was bent in, ” said Willie Acuna , Calexico resident.

Acuna says he was surprised to see the driver and passenger get out of the car with no injuries.

“He was saying that the tire came off, but no you can see on the film that he was just speeding,” said Acuna .

” Two years ago my dog got out, and she was run over by someone who was speeding. There not aware of animals, imagine if it’s a human being, we call the cops, and they don’t take action, ” said Vasquez.

This is the second major accident on this street in two months.

In early May, the vehicle of Calexico councilwoman Rosie Fernandez, was caught on camera knocking down a stop sign and ramming through a front lawn, but the driver fled the scene.

” One of these days they are gonna hit someone, or they are going to run over someone. We just ask the city to put some speed bumps, or more patrolling even that would help, ” said Vasquez.

We did speak to Calexico Public Works, and they say in order to install a new stop sign they need a work order from the Calexico Police Department, which hasn’t happened yet. It’s unclear if or when that will happen.
