CHS closed campus proposal passes

UPDATE

The Calexico School Board passed a closed campus proposal in a 3-2 vote. Starting next school year, students will not be able to leave campus for lunch.

Calexico High School students are fighting to keep an open campus policy during school lunch.

A CHS student started an online petition in favor of keeping the campus open.

The petition started two days ago and already has more than 2,000 signatures.

The proposed plan to close the CHS campus during lunch will be presented today at the Calexico Unified School District Board meeting.

According to the proposal posted on the district’s website, safety is a reason the closed campus is being proposed.

” She’s upset about it, she’s against it. There’s gonna be a meeting and she wants me to get involved in it so they can keep the campus open, but if it’s gonna happen it’s gonna happen. I know that she will be more safe inside the campus for lunch, ” said Artemisa Alvarez, CHS parent.

This proposal comes a month after several CHS students engaged in a massive brawl off campus during lunchtime, at least five students were arrested.

The fight left community members questioning the safety of students.

CHS administrators were unavailable for comment and it’s unclear if the proposal is a direct response to the fight.

“I’m pretty sure the reason it’s gonna be closed is that other people and not everybody, so I think it’s really unfair,” said Karla Alvarez, CHS student.

The proposal includes a new bell schedule with two lunches instead of one.

It also includes a plan with additional food options and a microwave service for students who choose to bring food from home.

The closed campus policy will go into effect next school year, but only if the Calexico School Board approves the decision.
