Local Red Cross seeking nominations for annual Real Heroes Awards

The American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties is asking the community to help nominate someone who has demonstrated extraordinary courage.

The Red Cross will be holding their 17th Annual Real Heroes Awards breakfast where local individuals and organizations will be honored for having made an impact through brave and compassionate actions.

The ceremony will be held aboard the U.S.S. Midway Museum on Friday, October 11.

Since the beginning of the event, 100 heroes have been honored.

“There are unsung heroes all around us, and we are seeking nominations from the public to discover and honor them as Real Heroes in our community,” said Sean Mahoney, Regional CEO of the American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties. ” It can be a colleague, family member, neighbor or friend who performed a selfless act of bravery or improves their community through humanitarian service every day. We want to recognize ordinary people with extraordinary courage right here in San Diego and Imperial Counties. ”

Those honored will be celebrated across nine categories: Animal Welfare, Community Partner, Fire & Rescue, Gift of Life, Good Samaritan, Youth Good Samaritan, Humanitarian, Law Enforcement and Military.

The Red Cross has also introduced new categories such as the Gift of Life award. This is awarded to an individual or group that gives blood or platelet donations. Gift of Life can also honor someone who may not donate themselves but inspires others to give blood or platelet donations.
