Extensive nursing home for veterans coming to Yuma

In just two years local veterans will have a new comfortable place to call home.

The Arizona Department of Veteran Services ( ADVS ) was granted almost $32 million in state and federal funding all to help veterans in our community with housing and health care.

Ten acres of land, courtesy of the City of Yuma, will be transformed into an 80 resident veteran home come June 2021. It will be located near Avenue 6E and 32nd street.

The facility will provide professionally skilled nursing care for geriatric and chronically ill veterans and their spouses.

ADVS deputy director, John Scott, says all veterans who were discharged under anything except dishonorable, are eligible for residency at the Yuma veterans homes.

” Any veteran who basically needs some form of skilled care that was written off by a doctor. So maybe assistance with daily living and activity. We also have a rehabilitative component, so if someone goes into the hospital, and they need to rehab for a short amount of time, they could also do that at the facility, ” said Scott.

Veterans will have direct access to physical, occupational, and speech therapy, a long with several services and amenities like housekeeping, a meditation room, laundry services, a hair salon, a gift shop, and even an on-site Veterans Benefits Counselor.

However, this isn’t just good news for vets. Members of the community can look forward to nearly 150 new job opportunities for nurses, doctors, and associates to help run the facility.

The monthly cost has yet to be determined, however, the V.A. will cover costs for veterans who are at least 70% disabled, but will also be accepting insurance.

The official groundbreaking will be held on June 22.
