World elder abuse awareness to be celebrated locally

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day will be celebrated at the Yuma Civic Center on June 15 th .

WACOG , Western Arizona Council of Governments, says Mayor Nicholls will be present at the event to present a proclamation from the City of Yuma acknowledging June 15 th as Elder Abuse Awareness Day. County Board of Supervisors Chairman Reyes will present a proclamation on behalf of Yuma County acknowledging Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

Governor Ducey sent a proclamation declaring June 15 th as State of Arizona Elder Abuse Awareness Day and we have just confirmed that staff will be attending to represent Representative Paul Gosar with a statement regarding Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The event’s goal is to bring families, friends and neighbors together to come and find out about the available resources that Seniors need to be able to Live Well, Age Well and Age Safely in our community. The focus is that every for profit business, agency and organization participating will be giving back to the community through education, information, demonstrations, presentations, resources and advocacy throughout the day with the special time of recognition for Elder Abuse Awareness Day (starting at 10:00).

There will be activities provided by Head Start, YMCA, Home Depot, and the nonprofit organization “Dream” all day long for children as well as Healthy Cooking demonstrations, Health and Fitness demonstrations, Chair Massages, Free Document Shredding, The Drug Take-Back Program facilitated by the Yuma Police Department, Health & Wellness Screenings provided by Sunset Community Health Center to include: Glucose screenings, Height & Weight, Body Mass Index Screenings, Blood Pressure screenings, and Dental Varnish Applications. Tentatively, they will also provide basic dental exams (awaiting Confirmation) Free Snow Cones, Free Goodie Bags to the first 500 attendees and a Free Family/multi-generational Photo provided by Doten Photography. Everything Offered at this event is free and we hope to reach out to as many folks as possible whether they are seniors or adult children and grandchildren who are trying to help their loved ones navigate the senior life or grandparents who are raising their grandchildren to find opportunities and resources to help them care for their grandchildren.
