Brawley church hopes to assemble 400 backpacks of school supplies and hygiene kits for students

The First Presbyterian in Brawley is looking to meet their goal of assembling 400 backpacks and hygiene kits for students in the community, but they’ll need the help of residents to make that happen.

The church has worked with school districts and the Betty Jo Mcneese Receiving Home and other local agencies on meeting the needs of the children who don’t have school supplies.

Residents are encouraged to come to service nights at 6 P.M. Sunday, to help put the backpacks and hygiene kits together where they can also learn ways they can also meet the needs in the community from other local agencies.

Pastor Katie Pazan said having essential school supplies does a lot for a young student’s confidence.

Pazan said, ” Something as simple as having a pair of scissors to work with at home. They may have these things that the teachers are supplying in the classroom, but they also need them at home. To do their homework and to practice. To really be where they’re supposed to be. And to feel good about themselves and not feel like they’re behind when they’re in the classroom. ”

Pazan said that students who are selected by the school district will receive the backpacks on their ” Back To School ” event in August where they’ll offer haircuts and dental screenings as well. The church will also take donations from residents for school supplies and hygiene products all Summer long.
