Residents call for council member to resign after hit-and-run video goes viral
Calexico residents are asking for council member Rosie Fernandez to resign after a car that belongs to her was seen on a video running a stop sign, hitting a car and then driving away.
Calexico businessman Guillermo Hermosillo said, ” People should call for her resignation. She’s held to higher standards than regular citizens. She’s one of our city leaders. ”
Ben Horton, resident, said, ” When you flee, that could lead to the impression that maybe you were impaired, and you did not want the police to get involved because of that. It goes back to integrity and character. ”
Fleeing the scene of an accident is a crime.
” That was a big mistake on her part. She would’ve looked better if she would’ve stayed and faced the law and the facts, ” Hermosillo said.
Joong Kim, Calexico businessman, said, ” She made the wrong decision or maybe that’s how she is, but that’s going to be up to the people how they’re going to view on her case. I support the resignation. ”
They said her actions has made her decisions come under a cloud of doubt.
“Can you really trust what she’s going to say when she talks about fairness, integrity, when her integrity is at question?” Horton said,
They want an investigation from an outside agency citing conflicts of interest at the local level.
“When this happened, I feel that we should have an outside agency to investigate the facts,” Horton said.
Bill Hodge, city council member, encouraged for people to let the law do its job.
“She’s entitled to due process and her day in court if that is the conclusion and then we will see about resignation,” Hodge said.
However, Hodge said he disapproves of anyone trying to hide responsibility.
“Obviously this particular incident did not result in good judgement or character,” Hodge said.
Calexico Police is still putting the report together, gathering information on the overall damages, and will soon forward it to the District Attorney’s office.
