Digital-free tutoring center thriving for 20 years

One local educator has been tutoring students in Yuma for generations, taking a simple yet classic approach to learning.

Bonnie Clayton’s tutoring center, The Learning Ladder, has serviced 5,882 children over the past 20 years.

As the founder and owner, Clayton said it’s felt good.

With more than 30 years of experience as a teacher, Clayton said concentration is what most students struggle with when learning.

So, in 1999, she opened a small tutoring center to help students catch up on the curriculum that they may have struggled with in school.

Surprisingly, to this day, they don’t use any computers at The Learning Ladder.

” We have not incorporated digital machines or computers or iPads into this center. But we have taught the children how to open a book, do some figuring, get a pencil. Let’s help you do that. And that has really helped students become independent, so they can be more successful with the digital, ” said Clayton.

Clayton believes this traditional method of learning coupled with a three-to-one student-teacher ratio, is what gives her students the confidence to try harder at understanding what they’re learning.

This year, The Learning Ladder was voted Yuma Family’s Favorite tutoring service.

Clayton thanks the parents for spreading the word about The Learning Ladder for the last 20 years.
