Yuma Parks and Recreation promote active live style and summer programs
Over the weekend, the city of Yuma’s Parks and Recreation invited residents to their ” Come out and Play Day ” event to promote an active and healthy lifestyle for families and kids and to kick off the Summer.
Filled with fun and water slides, Recreation Coordinator Nathan Zack said it also allows parents to look at events to keep their children busy all summer long.
” Every week there’s different programs where kids can sign up there. Whether it’s sports programs, basketball clinics, dodge ball clinics. Those are active right there. Swim lessons go on throughout the summer. There’s day camp going on as well, ” Zack said.
With the school year ending soon, Yuma resident Jessica Stevens wanted to make sure her kids aren’t stuck in the house.
Stevens said, ” It’s really important for them to be outside instead of stuck in front of a TV. Social interaction, and playing. It’s important for them. ”
Seven-year-old Israel Garcia said his parents encourage him and his siblings to enjoy the outdoors.
Garcia said, ” All my brothers we just go play outside and just play on the trampoline. On our tree house and just play tag, all that stuff. ”
Yuma City Council Member, Leslie Mcclendon said it’s important for kids to stay safe during the summer as well.
” Whether you’re around the pool, whether you’re out walking in the park, you need to stay hydrated. You need to follow rules and you always need to let someone know where you are at all time, ” said Mcclendon .
