County officials on the importance of wind advisory warnings

County officials are urging Imperial Valley residents to take wind advisories seriously, especially those with respiratory health concerns or allergies.

Last week, the Imperial County Air Pollution Control District urged residents to aware of being outside after winds of over 20 MPH raised health hazards.

Air Pollution Control Officer, Matt Dessert, said the advisory warnings give residents with health problems a headstart to stay out of harm’s way.

“We’re trying to knock down those emergency room visits to the hospitals. And a better use of the local doctor system and the inhaler and asthma treatments that are available,” Dessert said.

Due to the desert environment and open spaces that surround the valley, residents are prone to the threats of particulate matters in the air.

Dessert said Imperial County, “has always been somewhat subject to PM 10 and PM 2.5 issues because of large expanse area.”

Dessert said a certain group of residents are more likely to be affected by the strong winds and pollutants.

“Your youth. Your young people, infants, and your elderly. However, if you’re in between that age bracket and you have asthmatic conditions or your immune is down or you’re more susceptible to these problems then they’re also at risk,” said Dessert.

Dessert advised that those with respiratory problems should stay indoors.

Dessert added, “Is keeping their indoor space clean and clear. Change the filters on their air conditioning system. Keep their households in proper order. And when these episodes happen when they see them outside or they’re experiencing one from dust or perhaps it’s an allergen related to pollen then to come indoors.”
