Social media post involving firearms alarms parents

A photograph with firearms and a vague warning was circulating through social media regarding a potential threat to schools.

The post was shared and distributed by people in Imperial County.

The Calexico Unified School District and Calexico Police Department quickly investigated the post.

Sergeant Armando Orozco, with the Calexico Police Department said the post turned out to be a false threat.

“Once we were made aware, we assigned our school resource officer to investigate it and check the validity of it and that’s when it was determined it was not a real danger,” said Orozco.

“I feel unsafe, there’s a lot of things we need to do, but some people just don’t listen, said Rosa Rincon, a Calexico resident.

Rosa Rincon is a mother of four children in Calexico who said the post made her nervous because she has experienced similar threats at other schools her children have attended.

“These things just keep happening on and off, I got worried because my kids are there, and sometimes as parents we are the last ones to know.”

Orozco said parents should not be worried about sending their children to school, but they should be vigilant.

“See something, hear something, say something,” said Orozco.

“There has been a big push on how we react to these type of calls, in working with schools and establishing protocols and lockdowns,” Orozco said.

Calexico police determined the post did not originate in Imperial County, but out of state. The FBI is now handling the investigation.

Orozco said the Calexico Police Department continuously works with the Calexico Unified School District to ensure all students are safe.
