City of San Luis drafts plan of action for asylum seekers

San Luis City Council and several local church leaders gathered to draft a plan of action to help assist the asylum seekers who were released in the city from Border Patrol’s custody.

Mayor of San Luis, Gerardo Sanchez, confirmed he will not declare a state of emergency, but instead, he said the city and community will come together to help assist these families.

“Am I going to declare one? No, I’m not. Is this an emergency? Yes, it is. But what are we going to get from it? What has happened? Has the federal government sent any funding? Has FEMA arrived with trailers?” said Mayor Sanchez.

Mayor Sanchez expressed frustration due to agents dropping off undocumented immigrants throughout the city without enough notice.

“I sure wish they can at least speak with our chief of police, that would be nice, but the federal government works in different ways,” said Mayor Sanchez.

One of the non-profits in the city like Comite De Bienestar’s dance hall is now being used as a temporary shelter.

Stay tuned this Thursday as we speak to volunteers working at the Comite De Bienestar who are helping provide aid to the immigrant families currently housed in the dance hall.
