Man calls police on business which didn’t want to cash his alleged fake check

Calexico Police said 29-year-old Steven Gonzalez tried to cash an alleged fraudulent check at a cash exchange business on South Imperial and Fourth Street. The business refused; Gonzalez called the police.

Office Anthony Aguirre, “He was in front of the business kind of angry. That’s when I made contact with him and that’s when I made contact with him, telling me that they didn’t want to cash his check and they didn’t want to give him back his check.”

Police asked the business what the problem was.

“He stated that the check Mr. Gonzalez was trying to cash was a fraudulent check,” Aguirre said the business explained.

Gonzalez denied this and became more upset demanding his check be cashed or returned.

“A lot of his statements did not make sense. He provided me with where he works. I contacted his work and they stated that he was not an employee at that place which is out of town,” Aguirre said.

After examining the check and hearing Gonzalez’s explanations, Aguirre arrested Gonzalez.

“He started crying on scene because we couldn’t cash his check and he didn’t want to go to jail,” Aguirre said.

Gonzalez is charged with possession of a fraudulent check and trying to cash it.

Calexico police said they’ve been called many times on people trying to cash fraudulent checks, but this is the first time that one of them called the police on himself.
