Mayor Nicholls meets with Sen. McSally in DC
U.S. Senator Martha McSally (R-AZ) said she met with Yuma Mayor Doug Nicholls this week to receive an update on the border crisis.
McSally’s team said she has been in close communication with Nicholls on issues facing Yuma including the border security crisis. McSally previously met with Mayor Nicholls on April 17 and January 23 .
On Thursday, McSally said she called on Congress to approve the $4.5 billion requested by the White House to provide relief to towns that are being overwhelmed with migrant releases. During their meeting they also discussed expanding Highway 95.
“Communities like Yuma are simply overwhelmed by the border and humanitarian crisis as a result of the influx of migrants,” McSally said. “NGOs, federal, local, and state governments need to work together to improve communication and close the pull factors that are drawing Central Americans to our border in the thousands. Mayor Nicholls has a tough job ahead of him and I will continue to press the federal government to ensure he has the resources he needs to keep the Yuma community safe.”
On April 1 , McSally hosted a roundtable with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, mayors, and non-governmental organizations for an all-hands meeting to discuss the apprehension and release of migrants in Arizona communities.
On March 28 , McSally wrote a letter to the Department of Homeland Security calling for the federal agency to increase coordination with local government and non-profits when releasing migrants into Arizona communities.
