2020 Democratic candidates grabbing eyes and ears of generation z and millennials

According to the U.S. Department of Education, as of September 2018, the total student loan debt in our country was over $1.4 trillion.

This college affordability crisis is one issue that many of the 2020 Democratic candidates say they plan to resolve.

But, are the Democratic candidates using college affordability plans to attract millennial and generation z voters?

When Senator Elizabeth Warren’s college affordability plan began trending on social media Monday night, the idea of college affordability gained lots of attention from these generations.

Senator Warren’s proposal included the cancellation of student debt, universal free public college, and greater support for minority and low-income students.

However, students at Arizona Western College told News 11 it all sounded a little too good to be true.

Now younger voters want to know more about the presidential candidates and their campaigns.

Martha Sevis recently graduated from AWC, and when she heard Senator Warren’s proposal, she said, “I got a lot of questions for [the proposal] as well. Who is going to pay for it and what regulations are going to happen within those schools?”

Maluz Madrid, a sophomore at AWC, initially found out about Senator Warren’s proposal on twitter saying, “Before this tweet, I actually wasn’t even into the candidates and what they’re about or who was even running. But now this affects me personally. This affects my education personally. So I’m definitely going to see who’s running, what their views are, and what they plan on doing because my future is in their hands.”

Both AWC students believe earning a college degree is becoming a pre-requisite for most jobs of the future.

They just wish it wasn’t so ridiculously expensive.

Meanwhile, college affordability hasn’t gained much traction among the Republican candidates, who’ve more so focused on health care issues
