A man and woman arrested after trying to smuggle marijuana

A man and woman were arrested in separate smuggling attempts involving a total of 1,200 pounds of marijuana into the United States on Thursday.

On Monday morning a 25-year-old Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico woman was referred for further inspection of her Ford compact car after attempting to enter the U.S. through the Raul Hector Castro Port of Entry in Douglas after a CBP narcotics detection canine alerted to a scent within the cars’ bumpers where officers searched the vehicle and found 30 packages of marijuana weighing 37 pounds and estimated at $19,000.

That afternoon, officers referred a 49-year-old Douglas man for a further inspection of his trailer loaded with ceramic tile. A canine alerted to the trailer where officers examined the contents which determined 90 bundles of marijuana. The drugs weighed 1,155 pounds and estimated at $577,600.

Officers seized the drugs and vehicles. The subjects were both arrested and charged for narcotics smuggling. They were then turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
