Will rising gas prices stop drivers from hitting the roads?
Gas prices are on the rise nationwide with an average price of $2.76 a gallon.
News 11 found out the cheapest and most expensive gas in town and drivers in Yuma are paying as much as $2.99 a gallon for diesel.
Once drivers enter California, the prices are expected to go up even more.
People stopping in at gas stations around town definitely noticed the swift increase in gas prices.
According to the manager at the Chevron station on 18th Street and 4th Avenue, gas prices climb in the summer due to the high number of travelers. This also means more business.
However, the everyday driver is not looking forward to paying more.
Lexi is a driver who travels between Phoenix and Ramona, Calif., very often who said, “It’s scary, when [gas prices] keep going up. I kind of get worried that I’m not going to be able to afford it.”
Sharon, from San Diego, whose 92-year-old mother lives three cities away from her, agreed that the increase in gas prices is a financial worry.
“I’m retired, so the budget has to be readjusted for it,” said Sharon.
Russ, another driver stopping for gas at the Arco AMPM, is a winter visitor from Spokane, Wash. He said, “It’s hard on people who are on fixed incomes and it’s hard on people with low incomes.”
While Carolyn from Silver City, N.M., and drives an RV, said it takes 80 gallons of gas to fill, wasn’t surprised by the increased prices. She said, “We came from San Diego this morning and we were looking at an average of $3.75 a gallon. So $2.69 seems pretty reasonable to us today. Although we came through [Yuma] a couple of weeks ago and of course Arizona’s prices were better [back then].”
Gas prices could literally go up at any moment throughout the day.
In fact, before heading out, News 11 used the website Gas Buddy to check the current gas prices across all of the gas stations in town.
Circle K, which was the cheapest at the moment, jumped from $2.65 to $2.74 for regular gas, within 1 hour.
