DNA reveals skull found in desert belongs to California man

Authorities in western Arizona say a skull found in the desert belongs to a California man.

The Mohave County sheriff’s office said Wednesday that the skull belonged to 68-year-old Ilaisa V. Vaitai, who was reported missing in Ontario, California, in May 2017.

The sheriff’s office says a hiker found the skull more than a year ago in Mohave Valley.

It was sent to the University of North Texas for a DNA analysis, and the university found a match last month.

The sheriff’s office says it doesn’t suspect foul play in Vaitai’s death.
