Charity raising money to help homeless go home

The Imperial Valley community came out Saturday to help a local charity continue working with the homeless.

Jessica Solorio , Spread the Love Charity, said, “This [event] one helps us to be able to fund our programs that have no restrictions so that we’re able to reunify homeless individuals with family members or help them with housing assistance to get them off the street.”

10 teams competed at the 4 th Annual Carne Asada Cook-off.

Joe Alvarado, One World Beef team, said, “About 400, a little bit over 400 pounds .”

Daniel Soto, Kennedy’s Taco team, said, ” We love and we’ve always tried to give back to the community. We’ve always done that. We help the local churches, you name it. Everybody. ”

The charity provides many services to the homeless, with family as priority.

“Offer other services with feedings, such as birth certificates to be able to get services or eye-glasses so that they can be able to see,” Solorio said.

” We see the need for the help of the homeless people. So that’s the reason we decided to be part of this event, ” Alvarado said.

They said they’re not enablers of homelessness.

“Reunify with family or housing I think that’s very important, that’s not enabling them,” Solorio said.

The teams are hoping to raise several thousand dollars each to help the homeless go back home.

“We’re hoping to do over 2,000, $3,000,” Alvarado said.

On Saturday, Carne Asada First Place and People’s Choice went to One World Beef. Best Salsa prize went to I.V. Grill Society.
