Yuma Sector Border Patrol releasing migrants in Yuma

CBP announced Thursday it is releasing migrants into the Yuma community.

Yuma Sector Border Patrol has reallocated resources to handle the high number of immigrants entering the region illegally, according to Yuma Sector Border Patrol.

Yuma Mayor Doug Nicholls claimed the first group of migrants was disbursed into the community Thursday afternoon.

Mayor Nicholls added he found out that migrants would no longer be sent to Phoenix after being processed by the Yuma Sector Border Patrol over the weekend.

” The first thing you think of is the humanitarian impact it would have in our community. We want to make sure our streets of Yuma are safe, but you also want to make sure the humanitarian needs of people are addressed because we don’t believe it is in the culture of people in Yuma. Or the culture of the United States to let people go homeless and without resources, ” explained Mayor Nicholls.

He added those being released into the community are all family units, those who entered the country alone or have criminal backgrounds will not be released.

The Deputy Chief Border Patrol agent, Carl Landrum, explained that their processing center is currently occupied by nearly 800 people, but it is only meant to hold about 400 people.

In a statement to News 11, Yuma Sector Border Patrol explained how they are offering the appropriate care to immigrants and how they are proceeding with the placement of those who have entered the Yuma Sector unlawfully once they have been processed.

” As Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents continue to apprehend high numbers of illegal aliens, the sector has proportionately reallocated agents and other logistical resources to fulfill processing, detention, and humanitarian efforts as they address the continuous flow of family units and unaccompanied children in the Yuma Sector. To assist in handling the complexities of providing appropriate care and disposition of the subjects in our custody, Yuma Sector is relying heavily on other components and partnering agencies such as the CBP’s Office of Field Operations, National Guard personnel, and contracted service providers,” said Yuma Sector Border Patrol in a statement to News 11 Thursday.
