Calexico Police arrested a burglary suspect as he was allegedly on his way to commit another burglary.
33-year-old Juan Agustin Duran is behind bars for allegedly burglarizing a business twice within days. Police said he was arrested on his way to hit the business a third time.
Officer Oscar Ruiz said, ” He was just in the area. Basically, he was going south on the block going backwards to Hem’s Mortuary. ”
Duran was identified through surveillance video.
“I was able to actually identify the actual suspect from just previous police contacts with that person,” Duran said.
Police said they found burglary tools in Duran’s possession. He confessed to the first alleged burglary.
“He actually took us back to hems mortuary to give us a little bit more details of how he committed the actual crime,” Ruiz said.
Duran confessed to the second one during the investigation, as well.
“Window was actually just broken and the subject was unable to take anything from the actual business, but as he was leaving, he once again took some more copper from the same ac unit that he had already,” Ruiz said.
Police said the victim suffered thousands of dollars in damages and property loss.
” [An] AC unit was stripped out and all the copper was taken away. The value more or less of damages was estimated to be from $25,000 to $30,000 at the time, ” Ruiz said.
Duran is charged with felony vandalism, attempted burglary and grand theft. If convicted, he could face up to three years in county jail.
Authorities said one of the best things people can do to fight burglaries is, if they see something, report it to the police.
