Chief of Police John Lekan’s final pursuit in Yuma
After nearly thirty-three years on the force, the community was able to say goodbye and thank you to Yuma’s Chief John Lekan. He will officially be retiring this Friday and part of his final pursuit is to raise money for the fallen officer’s monument.
Chief Lekan said that putting his badge on every morning and wearing the thin blue line was always an honor, but being an officer was not his original plan.
“I worked at Safeway as a meat cutter and also a retail clerk for some time,” said Chief Lekan.
As Chief Lekan gets ready to put down his badge and his blue uniform he said he will always remember his fondest memories he had during his time at YPD.
“The number one thing that comes out for me is the people I’ve worked with, the people who have made this profession their career,” said Chief Lekan.
One of those fondest memories he will never forget is being able to immerse himself with those who have supported him the most, the community.
“Being able to work with the community, I’ve learned to love this community, I was born and raised in Yuma and I have become more in love with this place since joining law enforcement,” said Chief Lekan.
And with only three days left in his career, the first thing on his to-do list is to make sure to spend quality time with his family.
“My daughter made a list of days for me to go to spend time with her, so I got a lot of families I have a lot of catching up to do,” said Chief Lekan.
The new Chief of Police, Susan Smith will officially begin her journey in Yuma April 1st.
