SDSU Imperial Valley to offer a full-time criminal justice degree

San Diego State University Imperial Valley will be offering a four-year criminal justice degree program in fall 2019.

Students who have met the application deadline and requirements for admission to SDSU with a criminal justice major will be eligible to enroll in the four-year degree program.

“We are excited to be able to open one full-time degree program this fall,” SDSU IV Dean Gregorio Ponce said, “This is just the first of the four-year degree programs we are committed to developing. We want students to have the option to attend and earn a university four-year degree without having to leave the Valley.”

Criminal justice is one of the most popular programs offered at SDSU in Imperial Valley but is only available for transfer students or those enrolled through the Imperial Valley University Program (IVUP). It allows students to attend their courses through Imperial Valley College and local SDSU campus.

Both Dean Ponce and SDSU President Adela De La Torre strongly support the concept of adding four-year degree programs at the Imperial Valley campus.

“We can grow SDSU Imperial Valley and educate the global citizens, compassionate leaders and ethical innovators for the region and beyond,” Dr. de la Torre said when she toured the local campus in October.

The four-year undergraduate degree program at SDSU Imperial Valley is essential to the region because of the local graduating high school seniors that benefit from the program close to home.

“To grow our local economy, we have to raise the community’s college-educated percentages,” Dr. Ponce said. “SDSU IV can be an important part of the solution by offering more educational options and opportunities for students.”

The IVUP program is a joint admission program that offers affordable, high-quality education with a path to earn a bachelor’s degree in four years while obtaining an associate’s degree at the same time.
Dr. Ponce said IVUP is a viable and popular option for many students. The development of four-year degree programs at SDSU IV is intended to provide even more choices for local CSU eligible students.
