Authorities arrest suspect in possession of fraudulent checks and printer
What was supposed to be a simple traffic stop turned out to be more.
Calexico police say 29-year old Carlos Meza-Perez had over 20 fraudulent checks that belonged to different people and a laser printer.
Authorities believe Meza was using the laser printer to print out the fake checks.
Miguel Carbajal of the Calexico Police Department said, ” Some of them were blank. And so we think he was printing out or filling out these checks with a printer. ”
A more in-depth investigation confirmed that some checks were reported stolen. Something police say often happens during tax season.
” These checks had been taken during a residential burglary. And are expected to be taken from that actual burglary or the mailbox, ” said Carbajal .
Meza could be facing multiple charges.
Carbajal said, ” He’s being charged with check fraud and possession of stolen checks along with other various crimes. ”
Authorities remind residents to take precautions.
Carbajal added, ” We always tell the public to make sure to lock their vehicles and their house doors. Make sure there are no personal belongings left in the vehicle. Easily obtain by criminals. To protect and safeguard their identity. ”
Calexico police say the investigation is still ongoing.
